People come to the Qualcomm Institute’s (QI) Atkinson Hall to attend scientific conferences, view arts exhibits and performances, participate in internships, and advance research through shared facilities such as the Nano3 cleanroom. Now, a new exhibit is making it easy and fun for these and other visitors to learn more about QI, the organization behind these activities.

“With multimedia and interactive stations, the new exhibit offers a glimpse of the breadth of the Qualcomm Institute’s programs and facilities,” said Ramesh Rao, director of QI. “Showcase QI offers concrete examples of how QI uses technology to jumpstart innovation and bring together disciplines in new and often surprising ways. We hope people will reach out to us if they’d like to get involved in one of our projects or have ideas to share.”

Stations in the exhibit, located on the first floor of Atkinson Hall (around the corner from Gallery QI and across the hall from the Spatial Computing Lab), currently highlight:

  • The MEG Center, a state-of-the-art functional brain imaging facility for research and patient care
  • The Cultural Heritage Engineering Initiative (CHEI), a research group that brings engineering to the study and preservation of monuments, historic structures, archaeological sites, art and other artifacts
  • ALERTCalifornia, a collaboration that develops technology to stay ahead of natural disasters such as wildfires
  • Lei Lab, a creative endeavor breaking barriers among music, visual arts, theater, engineering and oceanography
  • Spatial Computing/Immersive Visualization Center, an initiative that uses technology to build serious games and train students in virtual and augmented reality
  • Center for Cyber-Archaeology and Sustainability (CCAS), a research group that combines archaeology, computer science, engineering and the natural sciences
  • Nano3 Cleanroom, a 10,000-square-foot facility that provides nanoscience, nanoengineering and nanomedicine fabrication
  • Neurodiversity in Tech, a two-month summer internship program for young adults on the spectrum interested in careers in technology
  • QI Innovation Space, a startup incubator that offers a supportive, interdisciplinary environment and convenient access to QI’s facilities and services, UC San Diego faculty experts and student interns

Other QI programs are featured in rotating videos on the screens across from the exhibit.

Showcase QI is open the same hours as Gallery QI, that is, from noon to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The exhibit, which was put together by QI’s Communications and A/V teams, also occasionally holds extended hours for special events.

Atkinson Hall is located at 3195 Voigt Drive, La Jolla; parking is available at the Hopkins Parking Structure. For additional information, see the QI Connect with Us webpage or email qi-communications@ucsd.edu.
