Experiential Learning about Semiconductor Careers: ExSTENT
UC San Diego’s Experiential Semiconductor Training in Emerging Nano-Technologies (ExSTENT) program gives San Diego County community college students an opportunity to learn about high-tech careers in the region. Over nine weeks, participants will learn how chips and advanced electronics are made, gain substantial hands-on training in UC San Diego’s Makerspace and the Qualcomm Institute Nano3 cleanroom, and explore fast-growing fields including biotechnology, renewable energy, photonics, and quantum information science.
Designed for students who want practical experience and a clearer route into the semiconductor industry, ExSTENT combines immersive laboratory work, applied mini-projects, and professional development in a supportive cohort environment.

Professional Development
Weekly workshops led by the CREATE STEM Success Initiative strengthen career readiness through training in scientific literature, technical writing, presentation skills, and networking. Participants also receive regular mentorship and individualized support.
Information Sessions
All information sessions for the Summer 2026 cohort have passed. Please check back in the fall for information session dates for the 2027 cohort.
Support and Partnerships
ExSTENT is funded by the National Science Foundation’s ExLENT Beginnings program (NSF 25-511) via award #2526081. The program is made possible through collaborations with CorDx, First Solar, Quantum Design, and the Quantum Optical Institute of Southern California. Organizations interested in partnering or adapting this model are invited to get in touch.
