With more than 180 industry partners to date, the Qualcomm Institute maintains a broad diversity of models for its interactions with private companies. There is no membership fee to be a partner, nor does QI require that a partner use the institute’s facilities or services, nor must a partner donate cash or in-kind gifts to support QI’s research enterprise. Nevertheless, in the five-year period starting with FY2011, 45 companies provided cash or in-kind gifts totaling approximately $7.8 million. The bulk of research contracts and grants involved federal grants, but 12 companies provided nearly $6.3 million in funding through contracts to support faculty and students on sponsored research projects.

Industry researchers and technicians are invited to use QI’s specialized labs on a recharge system, helping QI to offset the costs of lab equipment and personnel. For example, nearly 100 companies paid for access to the Nano3 nanofabrication facility, generating almost $4.5 million in user fees from industry partners alone in the five-year period. Taken together, in the same period, the combination of gifts, contracts and grants, and Nano3 user fees effectively allowed more than 150 industry partners to invest more than $18.5 million in the QI research enterprise.
