TECHNOLOGICAL AND INSTITUTIONAL INNOVATIONS

​The mission of the Qualcomm Institute (QI) at UC San Diego is to develop technological and institutional innovations, using our unique laboratories and research spaces to house multidisciplinary collaborations. QI collaborates with local, state, national and international partners to bring specific capabilities into our research mix, and these capabilities facilitate the formation of novel teams that can compete successfully for external funding and partner with industry. This broader ecosystem enhances the breadth and cross-cutting nature of QI’s teams, ensuring that the products and technologies produced in QI labs can be applied broadly to benefit society.

QI’s strategic vision places particular emphasis on the exploration of enabling technologies of wireless communications, photonics, cyberinfrastructure, as well as nanotechnology and micro-electro-mechanical systems (nano-MEMS). In turn, developments in those technologies are harnessed to speed advances in the fields of health, energy, the environment and culture to benefit society and help keep California on the cutting edge of tomorrow’s technologies. The institute has also become a testing ground for interdisciplinary, campus-wide initiatives and testbeds, notably in robotics, the brain and design.
