Student-Driven Research and Development

Computing applications are ubiquitous, mainstream and cool. Student interest in computing is at the highest levels, yet STEM programs must continually work towards improving student motivation towards learning. Successful student engagement practices have maximized active participation and hands-on activities. In computing, we have a unique opportunity to early on provide students with development projects inspired by their experiences, which can be immediately deployed and tested.
In this talk, I will discuss a series of mobile application development projects were students as young as sophomores have deployed applications to improve STEM teaching, the campus life or lead entrepreneurship bids. The results support the idea of including a full development experience as a core requirement in the computing program. I will also show examples of student-driven learning applied in the classroom, along concepts from project-based teaching and effort-based grading, to improve the motivation for a self-driven education that derives in an enduring learning experience.
Edward Latorre-Navarro is a Professional Engineer and an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Puerto Rico in Arecibo. He has a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Florida. His research work combines elements of natural language processing, human-centered design, machine learning and cloud computing, to develop software applications that can improve the academic experience for student educational goals.
