This annual event hosted by the Qualcomm Institute is organized by the San Diego Indian American Society to award 21 scholarships to high school graduates. The speaker is Amb. Jamal Khokhar, president and CEO of the Institute of the Americas.

Twenty-one outstanding graduates, irrespective of national origin, from 19 San Diego County high schools, will receive approximately $60,000 in cash awards and U.S. Congressional Certificates:

  • 15 Gandhi Memorial Scholars:  Nicole Abreu, Jay Dalvie, Asia Duncan, Lucero Garcia, Odelia Ha, Cristian Jarquin, Mihiri Kotikawatta, Onrei Ladao, Nicole Martindale, Anugraha Panneerselvam, Ashwath Radhachandran, Shelby Spillers, Marlenne Velasquez, Ryan Winters and Sai Yandapalli.
  • 6 AVID Scholars: Salim Aweys, Baldred Carrillo, Ariana Diaz Rauda, Cameron Duran, Estevan Mendez and Christian Robles.

Special guests at the event will tentatively include the venerable. Lama Tenzin Dhonden, the Personal Emissary for Peace to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, and founder of the Friends of the Dalai Lama Foundation..


Amb. Jamal Khokhar, 
President & CEO, Institute of the Americas

Ambassador  Khokhar has been President and CEO of the Institute of the Americas since September, 2015. Previously, he was a senior career diplomat with the Canadian Foreign Service in the Department of Global Affairs. From 2010-2015 he was Canada’s Ambassador to Brazil.
