DESCRIPTION/ABSTRACT:

As part of ECE Alumni Day, the Electrical and Computer Engineering department is hosting its second Design Competition to showcase technologies created to improve the quality of life for senior citizens.

Teams of students will be competing for $7,000 in prize money, including $4,000 for first place. Final proposals for the technology to be developed were submitted in January, and students could earn academic credit for participating in the development of prototype devices or platforms through most of the academic year. The competition is a partnership between the Jacobs School of Engineering and the Division of Social Sciences, as well as the campus Healthy Aging Initative. Each team has at least one member from engineering and one from social sciences. To qualify for the competition, each team member must also have taken at least one of the following courses by the end of winter quarter: entrepreneurship (ECE 180) or human-computer interaction for health (CSE 190), product design and entrepreneurship (MAE 154), design of everyday things (DSGN 1) or interaction design (COGS 120).

Some 17 teams will be presenting their prototype systems that range from a mobile app to help the loved ones of a patient with Alzheimer's disease, to a "hyper portable, inflatable cushion" that makes it easier for seniors to get up after being seated in a chair. The team behind the SmartSole are promising an insole for shoes with an array of sensors and powerful algorithms that analyze the user's walking patterns and warn if there is a risk of injury -- all to boost seniors' confidence to walk independently. The full list of technologies created this year is available on the competition website at http://jacobsschool.ucsd.edu/events/2016/designcompetition/.

Attendes at the June 10 showcase will vote for the winning technologies. All ECE Alumni Day activities are free of charge, but registration is requested here.
